RUSSIAN fast attack guided-missile ships are to
conduct naval drills in the Mediterranean sea, the Kremlin has confirmed.
Two warships will lead the exercise on Monday
supported by several other smaller Russian navy vessels.
The fleet includes two vessels armed with
Kalibr-NK cruise missile, with eight missiles each, and will test Moscow's
ability to mount a sea invasion as well as counter terror attacks onboard a
vessel.
The drill is scheduled to run until later this
month and coincides with the Kremlin's war games in the Black Sea.
Exercises involving warships and MI-8 and
Ka-27PS helicopters will practice repelling underwater attacks by
"saboteurs", a statement said
The fleet's commander said the ships would take
part in counterterrorist activities, minesweeping and search and rescue
operations.
The Russian defence ministry said the
Mediterranean drills would be held to the east near the coast of Syria.
A mock terror attack will be staged at sea,
with Russian sailors acting out a senior in which they have to storm an pirate
vessel transporting terrorist fighters.
They will also perform artillery and missile
firing in conditions closely resembling real-life combat.
Increased Russian drills come as relations
between Ukraine and Russia continue to sour.
Ukraine has been holding its own military
exercises in the country's southern region since Wednesday, involving its fleet
of warplanes, which the spokesman for Ukraine's General Staff insisted was
pre-planned.
Heightened tensions come after Russian
President Vladimir Putin accused Kiev on Wednesday of using terrorist tactics
to try to provoke a new conflict in Crimea.
