Man Gets 4 Years Imprisonment For Drug Trafficking

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday, sentenced one Frederick Aghedo, 28, to four years imprisonment for dealing in Indian hemp (cannabis sativa).

The prosecutor Mr Aliyu Abubakar told the court that the convict committed the offence on June 21, 2015.

He said that the convict was arrested with the 9kg of hemp at the Idiroko area of Lagos by NDLEA officials. He said the offence contravenes the provisions of Section 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap 30 Laws of the Federation, 2004.

Aghedo pleaded guilty to a charge of trafficking drugs, he was consequently convicted and sentenced to four years in prison by Justice Saliu Saidu of the Federal High Court.

The Judge however, said he was lenient because Aghedo was a first time offender. “I have considered the facts before me particularly that the accused is a first offender. “However, the court cannot close its eyes to the harmful effects of drugs in the society.

“The accused is hereby sentenced to four years imprisonment, beginning from the date of his arrest,’’ he ruled.

Saidu ordered that the drug should be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for destruction.
