A four-man kidnap gang has abducted Chief Geoffrey
Agorodo, a community leader in Ogbia Town, Ogbia local government area
of Bayelsa state.
The Nation reports that Agorodo was kidnapped on Friday,
October 23, at about 8:30pm by unidentified gunmen who were reportedly
dressed in army uniform.
The gunmen struck at Ogbia waterfront and seized their victim. They
bundled Agorodo into a waiting speedboat and sped off after shooting
sporadically to scare people away.
Osaanya B. Osaanya, the chairman of the Ogbia Clan, Ijaw Youth
Council Worldwide, condemned the incident, adding that there were too
many abductions in the council.
“Kidnapping has become a worrisome development in Ogbia.
Kidnappers have laid siege in our council and at the last count over
five persons were abducted in the past one month. This is unacceptable.
Most of the victims were elderly men and women including traditional
rulers,” he said.
Osaanya called on youths to desist from criminal activities and engage themselves in legitimate means of livelihoods.
The chairman appealed to the state government and security agencies
in the state to find a productive approach of tacking criminality in the
council.
Meanwhile, Butswat Asinim, the police public relations officer,
confirmed the development and added that investigation was ongoing to
trace the criminals and rescue the victim.
A few days earlier, another criminal incident happened in Bayelsa state. Unknown gumnen murdered Alawari Ogili, the pastor of Land of Peace Ministry, at his residence in Yenagoa.
