Gianni Infantino
has been selected by the world of football as the man to recover the
credibility of a system which has been up in the air since May of last
year, when corrupt directors began to be arrested and details began to
emerge of the criminal practices engaged in to embezzle 300 million
dollars in fraudulent fees and contracts.
The Swiss took the FIFA presidency with 115 votes, ahead of 88 for
Salman and 4 for Prince Ali. The difference emerged in the second round
of voting, after a virtual tie in the first round, with just three votes
separating the two front-runners.
It only took Blatter four days to resign, but nine months have passed
before FIFA named its new head, who is tasked with rebuilding a world
in which no-one currently holds any faith and whose financial clout has
been significantly weakened after losing 200 million dollars in
sponsorship.
Six years' experience in UEFA
The task ahead of Infantino will be gruelling and complicated, but if
he applies what he did during his six years as the general secretary of
UEFA, there is hope for him. That was his calling card in the global
spotlight, and he just needs to repeat what he did before in his new
headquarters in Nyon.
