A house designed to provide an earthly residence for the returning Lord will be sold in the spring
A 17-room Bronx mansion designed to give a home to Jesus when he returns to earth is to go on sale for $10 million (£6.73 million).
The hilltop house was built in 1928 by the wife of a wealthy shipping
engineer, who was a member of the Outer Court of the Order of the Living
Christ – an organisation many saw as a cult.
The house originally had just one bathroom, although it was refurbished
in the 1990s and now has five, plus seven bedrooms, a gym and sauna.
“The house has such a history to it,” said Sandra Galuten, the
current owner, who is putting the property for sale in February. She told The New York Post: “It is really interesting.”
Ayo Haynes, the estate agent, said the house was “very Downton Abbey”.
“The estate reminds you of a bygone era,” he said. “It’s very Downton Abbey, down to the servants’ staircase.”
And Mrs Galuten said she was thrilled with her lavish, marble and mosaic renovations, which she described as a “labour of love”.
“Jesus would probably love the house,” she said. “I redid it in very elegant taste.”
Genevieve Ludlow Griscom, who built the house,
lived in a small cottage to the side. Members of the religious order
reportedly dusted regularly, and the floors were kept polished, in
anticipation of Jesus’ return. Mrs Griscom would enter for an hour or so
every day and play a large pipe organ.
She died in 1958 aged 90, and the order reportedly disbanded soon after.
In 1960, the property was sold to a developer for $700,000 and at one
point was intended to be turned in to school dormitories, but fell into
disrepair.Ayo Haynes, the estate agent, said the house was “very Downton Abbey”.
