Hapless climber was resced after he got stuck on a 14ft cliff |
A HAPLESS teenage holidaymaker was rescued after getting stuck up a 140ft cliff in front of hundreds of bemused sunbathers.
The 16-year-old was left clinging to clumps of grass while a friend climbed up after him in an unsuccessful bid to coax him down.
The emergency services were called and some 20 firemen in six vehicles attended the scene along with eight coastguards, two ambulance paramedics and a beach warden.
He was winched to the top, prompting the crowd of 600 bathers below to cheer and clap.
Visitor Nicola Langhorn, 45, from Ilminster, Somerset, caught the drama on camera.
She said: "We had just arrived on the beach and I noticed this guy high up on the cliff, I don't know what he was doing but he didn't look comfortable at all.
The climber decided to scale the steep cliff at the famous beauty spot of Durdle Door in Dorset |
The poor lad was holding on to the thinnest bits of grass to stop himself from falling
"The guy was well and truly stuck. He was strapped into a harness and pulled to the top. The whole beach cheered, he must have been mortified."

"He looked so pleased to see someone come over the edge to save him.
"The hundreds of people watching meant that the crews were under a bit of extra pressure but they did a good job and even got a round of applause at the end."
The incident happened at about 1pm on Sunday and the teenager, who is believed to be Polish, was stuck for about 30 minutes.
Mr Why said: "The cliffs around Durdle Door are used by professional climbers.
"It is fair to say that they were unprepared to climb such risky cliffs and can consider themselves fortunate to have escaped without injury.
"Any incident on these coasts has the potential to be serious."
The magnificent Durdle Door landmark is on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site near the village of Lulworth.
The shingle beach that sits beside the limestone arch was packed full of sun-seekers over the weekend, which was one of the hottest of the year.
