Atletico Madrid Midfielder's goal knocked Barcelona out of the Champions League in 2013/14 |
He is already an icon at Atletico Madrid.
At just 24, Koke has already played over 250 games in a red and white shirt so he has more than earned his stripes.
The youngster started his career at the club where he has played all
his life and step by step, game by game, he has won the hearts of the
supporters and earned a place in the history of the club on the
Manzanares riverbank.
Koke's name was on everyone's lips after one of the most important games in Atletico's rich history.
It was on April 9, 2014 when Barcelona came to the Vicente Calderon Stadium to determine who remained in the Champions League.
The Blaugrana were favourites despite the 1-1 scoreline from the first leg, but Diego Simeone had other plans.
He sent out a team to take on Barcelona, to go forward and to also keep possession of the ball.
The result of such audacity was a goal in the fifth minute.
It was a stroke of genius for Simeone although Atleti had to work hard for the rest of the game to stop Barcelona from scoring.
The man behind that important goal was Koke.
It was his first and last goal in the Champions League 2013/14 -
although he did make two assists - to put Atletico up there as one of
the four best teams in Europe for the first time in 40 years.
Next up were Chelsea who were soundly beaten in the second leg at
Stamford Bridge, which earned the Rojiblancos a place in the final
facing city rivals Real Madrid in Lisbon.
Now the No.6 still believes that anything is possible.
His face lights up as he looks back on their past encounter with Barcelona in the Champions league.
He is not a goal scorer but will always make his mark in the big games.
