Benzema on the road to record-breaking season

Real Madrid The striker has bagged 27 goals so far in 2015/16
Karim Benzema netted his 27th goal of the season as Real Madrid saw off Villarreal 3-0 at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night, and is well on the way to his best ever season in Spain.

Twenty three goals in 24 La Liga games, added to four scored in seven Champions League outings, represents some of the best form Benzema since joining Madrid in 2009.

Benzema is now just five goals away from matching his most fruitful campaign in the white shirt, the 32 goals he scored in the 2011/12 season his best, and could have as many as seven games, should Real Madrid reach the Champions League final, to match and better that tally.

The French striker opened the scoring just before half-time as he headed in from a rebound, ensuring Los Blancos kept the pace with title rivals Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, who won their respective matches earlier on Wednesday evening.

It has been an eventful couple of weeks for Benzema, who had the news of his European Championship omission confirmed by the French Football Federation (FFF) and national coach Didier Deschamps, but the former Lyon man has been fully focused on the job in hand at Real Madrid.
